GWAR Saint Louis Concert reviews
GWAR!!!
My niece is a Gwar fan, and asked me to escort her to the concert. I said yes when I saw The Red Chord on the lineup also. How did I managed to miss out on Gwar all these years?!?
The Red Chord opened the show with straight up, balls out Death Metal. Then Job for a Cowboy came on, with two guitars and some serious musical talent.
After they cleared the stage, pretty soon the whole crowd was chanting GWAR! GWAR! GWAR! Then the "Gwar 25th anniversary tour" video started. Okay, so even if these guys can't play, they have some Monty Python caliber comedy and acting skills. Then they hit the stage, and the crowd (already whipped to a frenzy by two sets of non-lame moshing and crowd surfing) went insane! Okay, honestly, I should have had some idea what to expect when most of the venue was covered in tarps and plastic sheeting. The show is a bit of a blur for me, since I was literally trying to survive the mosh pit (I'm 6'2", 300# and have martial arts training) while keeping tabs on my niece and enjoying the show.
The review: I was never a member of the "KISS army" back in the day- I thought they sucked then, and still do. I was a fan of bands like Judas Priest and Metallica instead. But after one show of Gwar, I am now a proud Scumdog Warrior. Musically, they are better than KISS ever dreamed of being (not damning with faint praise here) and have some serious theatrical and comedy chops also. I was soon screaming along with the fans on "Where is Zog?", and "Let us Slay" was almost a religious experience.
Warning: If you've never been to a Gwar show, check them out on YouTube first; the South Park disclaimer- "This show contains highly offensive material and should not be viewed by anyone." actually applies to Gwar. They make South Park look like wholesome family entertainment.
Overall, for the price of the tickets, seeing these three bands in an intimate venue like Northern Lights in Clifton Park (near Albany) NY was an incredible value. Easily three times the 'bang for the buck" (no pun intended) of seeing Metallica, Lamb of God and Volbeat- and that show was awesome.
And Oderus Urungus, if you and your fellow Scumdog Warriors read this, I have dusted off my guitar, my armor and my weapons. Given the band's turnover rate, I assume one wins a place by defeating a current member. Sharpen your blades- I am coming.
